LONDON:A new cholesterol-lowering drug, Crestor, will go on sale in the UK this morning, just as Britain is facing stiff competition for a cheaper rival to Crestor.
The drug,, will start on the back of a £1 billion UK takeover, the lowest such price for the British drug since it was invented in 1955. It was first brought by AstraZeneca on the back of an agreement to combine the drug with the cholesterol-lowering drug statin to produce the drug in Britain.
The British pharmaceuticals giant has already announced that it is to buy the drug, which will be sold at an initial price of £7.50 for a pack of five tablets.
In the US, the drug is expected to be sold as a cash-on-stock deal, but AstraZeneca is already selling the drug at a premium in the UK.
“We are very happy to sell Crestor to patients in the UK, and we have the confidence of our patients,” AstraZeneca chief executive David Brennan told the Daily Mail. “It is important for patients to be aware of the potential impact of taking the drug and how we can improve on the benefits to them.”
